Firemen to the Rescue
Lord have mercy. Today has been a doozy. It's Sunday, November 27. We had every intention of getting up and getting ready for church today. Around 9:30, I got a text from the bank asking if I'd made a $30 purchase. When I checked my account, there were 5 charges, all to the same place, and all for about $30. I spent the next half hour on the phone with the bank getting my card deactivated and discussing my next steps.
A little while later, I told Chance I wanted to go get our Christmas tree. I've wanted to decorate for a week now, but he's a "only after Thanksgiving" kind of guy and we haven't had any time this weekend. So, I walked out to the car, put Myers in, closed the doors, and that's when I heard it. The doors locked. With Myers inside. And my keys. And my phone. Panic.
When we were traveling last week, I put both my key and my spare in my purse because the batteries were going low and I wanted to make sure we were ok driving. My phone will unlock my car remotely, but as I said, it was now inside my purse locked in the front seat. Myers was buckled in his seat. The windows were up. I about lost it. I had Chance use his keys to get me in the house and I told him to call the police. As he was on the phone with them, I was pulling up the VW car site which should let me remotely access my car's locks. My fingers were shaking. Myers was in the car crying and saying "get out." I kept telling Myers, through the window, "It's okay." My neighbor pulled out of his garage to go to the grocery store. He tried to help me on the computer because I was so frantic, I couldn't calmly look for what I thought should work to open the car. We were having no luck.
The fire department and police showed up. They were all very calm. They said, "It's not hot out, so he's ok." In the back of my mind though, I thought, "This poor child is stuck inside, strapped in his seat, and he knows something is wrong." They asked if I had a spare. I told them it was in the car with the other key. They didn't have the tool they needed to get the window down/to unlock the door. They were calling the other firetruck. I said, "Maybe I can get in through the app from my husband's phone," which I had already started to download. Again, fingers shaking and myself on the verge of tears, I entered the codes and confirmations to allow Chance's phone to access my car. Finally, the car unlocked. I sort of "fell" backwards onto the golf cart. The fireman opened the door and got Myers out. I stood up and told Myers he was so special, the firemen came to see him. The police officer gave Myers a sticker like his badge. I held Myers so tightly and apologized to the firemen and police. I thanked them for coming and they said I was the hero for getting the car to unlock with the app. Hardly. Thank goodness for technology, but how in the world the car locked with the keys inside to start with, I don't know.
Myers and I went inside and cried a minute, together, hugging on the couch. His sweet little face was red from being upset. After lots of hugs and a brownie we had leftover, we braved the car again for an outing to get that Christmas tree. Unfortunately, we didn't find one we liked, but after a quick trip to Target, Myers got a fun new toy (it's the least I owe him) and discovered that he loves Peeps. My sweet boy.
Yesterday, Chance posted on Facebook that Myers was so brave. After today, I have no doubt in my mind about how brave he is.
